Three Reaching People member organisations – E2, The Emerald Centre, and The Centre Project – came together through the Co-op Youth Strand to create youth-led, creative spaces across Leicester aimed at tackling loneliness and isolation. Over 12 weeks, 96 young people shaped and delivered projects using gaming, music, and art to explore what loneliness means to them, build confidence, and create safe spaces where they could be themselves.

Each group designed activities based on their interests. E2 used gaming to spark discussion and create a welcoming space in Beaumont Leys, while The Emerald Centre used music to support self-expression. The Centre Project worked with an art therapist and a group of young refugees and asylum seekers to produce a powerful gallery of framed artwork. Many sessions included social eating, which was vital for young people living alone or in low-income households.

Young people led decisions and helped shape every element of the programme - from session content to the final celebration event, which brought all three groups together to showcase their work and share learning. Short films were created to capture the impact of the project and support future promotion.

This collaborative pilot helped youth organisations better understand the causes of youth loneliness, the impact of poverty and social exclusion, and how creativity can offer meaningful ways for young people to connect and build resilience. It also highlighted the need for longer-term funding to sustain these vital spaces.
