Reading in the UK is currently facing a significant challenge. Recent research shows that only one in three children and young people say they enjoy reading in their free time, while just one in five read something daily for pleasure.

Adults also report that a lack of time often prevents them from reading regularly. However, reading for enjoyment is consistently linked to positive educational, social and economic outcomes, making it more important than ever to encourage people of all ages to engage with reading in ways that work for them.

Local organisations are working together to support the national Year of Reading, focusing on making reading more visible and accessible in everyday life.

To support this initiative, a recent Reaching People members’ meeting introduced organisations to the national Year of Reading, with the National Literacy Trust outlining how local charity and VCSE partners can play a role.

On World Book Day in March, several member organisations - including Leicestershire Cares, The Emerald Centre and others - ran activities with children. Thanks to a generous donation of 200 books from the National Literacy Trust, children attending those sessions had the opportunity to choose and take home a free book, helping to spark a love of reading that could last a lifetime.
