Sukhdeep Samra has been volunteering for Reaching People since May 2024. He works with the charity for two days per week on a range of support and administration activities including submitting receipts into Excel spreadsheets and resetting mobile phones to be distributed as part of the Refurb IT project.

Sukhdeep was looking for a volunteering opportunity after he officially retired following a career that included roles in administration at De Montfort University, helping with tax returns for HMRC and working for a clothing company, where he helped to develop a website, as well as administration and order processing.

Explaining why he got involved with volunteering, Sukhdeep said: “Now I’m semi-retired, I have a lot of spare time and am financially secure. My father introduced me to Reaching People as he’d been part of the groups where they were teaching digital skills.

“I try and keep busy in my spare time by doing things such as creating websites. I also offer advice in an epilepsy support group. I have had the condition for over 30 years but have it under control for a decade now. There’s around 20 people in the group and it really boosts my confidence by being able to give them hope.

“Volunteering with Reaching People is brilliant, I really enjoy it. It can be joyful and I get to meet a lot of different people. I’m looking forward to starting another new project on Refurb IT next!”
