The Just ASK digital project has been running for almost two years, supporting individuals and organisations to build confidence in their digital presence, whilst using online services.
Working alongside Katherine and Emma at Reaching People, Zara Ahmad has been playing a key role in reinforcing learning amongst trainers and course participants, as well as delivering ongoing training to ensure the project’s impact continues beyond individual sessions.
Talking about Just ASK, Zara said: “One of the major points of the project is its focus on sustainability. Organisations and community groups are encouraged to detail their learnings to new participants, enabling them to train their own staff and volunteers. The face-to-face support provided by our team highlights the value of the training as well as offering follow-up sessions where needed, helping groups to embed digital skills into their day-to-day work.
“The project has helped participants to become more digitally aware and confident, particularly in accessing essential local services. This includes online access to NHS and GP services, council information and other support services that are all delivered digitally. For many onboarders, the training has removed barriers to engagement and opened up new opportunities.”
A break leads to opportunities
Previously a primary school teacher, Zara took a break and spent time travelling with her partner and family. After taking a career break, Zara then became involved with a local women’s group at Highfields Library. Through contacts she knew there, she was offered a part-time role as a personal assistant, which later developed into a full-time project manager position. This transition allowed her to develop new skills beyond the classroom and explore a different career path.
Zara continues: “I have a passion for helping people and coupled with a desire for more flexible working whilst raising my teenage children, I was keen to work in a community-focused role. When Emma, who I knew through volunteer training, highlighted the Just ASK opportunity, it proved to be an ideal fit for me.
“The role has allowed me to combine my professional experience with a commitment to supporting communities, while contributing to a project that delivers meaningful, long-term impact.”
